I make these to commission, so they can be made in various sizes and materials. Some are feminine and some are masculine. I made the first head in the 1980s when I was given a commission to make a bust of a client’s father. They wanted something very different. It was the start of my experiment with layers, which continue to this day. Each layer is individually shaped by hand.
‘A furniture maker’s life is full of repetition. I’ve tried to make a virtue of this “problem” by emphasising rather than resisting it. My work is therefore often composed of multiple and layered components. Over the years, these works have become ever-more complex, involving more components, shaped in increasingly complex ways.’
