The Crab Stool

Material

Oak and lignum vitae

Dimensions: 41cm x 52cm x 23cm

I wanted to make a stool that looked fragile, but was in fact incredibly strong. I like the fact that it perches, almost like a crab, ready to scuttle away. It gives it a dynamism and energy which contradicts its purpose. Despite appearances, it is very comfortable to sit on.

‘A furniture maker’s life is full of repetition. I’ve tried to make a virtue of this “problem” by emphasising rather than resisting it. My work is therefore often composed of multiple and layered components. Over the years, these works have become ever-more complex, involving more components, shaped in increasingly complex ways.’
