Mastering dovetails is the pinnacle of a cabinetmaker’s skill. It takes a couple of hours to learn how to do dovetails, and a lifetime to perfect them. Normally they are hidden in quality drawer construction, but I wanted to make them highly visible in a decorative way. The advantages of dovetail joints, apart from their beauty, is their phenomenal strength.

‘A furniture maker’s life is full of repetition. I’ve tried to make a virtue of this “problem” by emphasising rather than resisting it. My work is therefore often composed of multiple and layered components. Over the years, these works have become ever-more complex, involving more components, shaped in increasingly complex ways.’
